Friends Don?t Let Friends Get Into Finance

After having been a tech executive for many years, I needed to take a break, and I wanted to give back to society. Duke University engineering dean Kristina Johnson gave me a great spiel about how the school?s Masters of Engineering Management program churns out great engineers, and how engineers solve the world?s problems. She said that I could make a big impact by teaching engineering students about the real world and encouraging them to become entrepreneurs. I felt so excited that I joined the university without even asking for a proper salary. That was in 2005. I was shocked?and upset?when the majority of my students became investment bankers or management consultants after they graduated. Hardly any became engineers. Why would they, when they had huge student loans, and Goldman Sachs was offering them twice as much as engineering companies did? So when the investment banks tanked in 2008, I cheered because engineering had become sexy again for engineering grads (read my BusinessWeek column). But thanks to the hundred-billion-dollar taxpayer bailouts, investment banks recovered and went back to their old, greedy ways. And they began offering even more money to engineering grads (and themselves).

FCC proposing data roaming rules, not interested in commonizing carriers

FCC chairman Julius Genachowski briefly mentioned data roaming at CTIA last week, but now he's telling Congress that action is inbound, to ensure rural carriers don't get left behind the rest of the cellular industry. You see, in 2007 the Commission mandated cheap roaming agreements for voice and messaging services to let regional carriers compete, but cellular data is the bee's knees now (as those of you reading this on a smartphone can attest) and those agreements won't protect the Tiny Tims of telecom in a world of VoLTE anyhow. So, as he explains in a letter sent to members of the Senate and House, the chairman has come up with a set of rules, which will "incent potential roaming partners to come to the bargaining table to negotiate private commercial deals."

"The draft order under consideration eschews a common carriage approach and leaves mobile service providers free to negotiate and determine, on a customer-by-customer basis, the commercially reasonable terms of data roaming agreements," reads another letter. Needless to say, we're looking forward to hearing how the FCC will encourage competition while still letting the big boys negotiate from their multi-billion-dollar spectrum holding positions.

GetGlue BlackBerry app now available for download

GetGlue, the popular social activity check-in app, has finally arrived in BlackBerry App World. Now, users of just about any BlackBerry 8xxx or 9xxx device with OS 5 or better can share what they're watching, reading, playing, listening to, or thinking about.

After a little more than a month in beta testing, GetGlue is now fully ready to provide BlackBerry owners with a way to earn piles of free stickers for posting their check-ins. The app features a stream view where you can keep tabs on friends' activities, and a polished, streamlined rating interface. There's also a dedicated section for displaying time-limited achievements.

Rhapsody app for Windows Phone 7 now available in Zune Marketplace

Rhapsody continues strengthening its position as a go-to music streaming service in the U.S. In the wake of offering an extended 60-day trial of its services, Rhapsody has now launched a Windows Phone 7 app.

It's very similar to the Rhapsody apps for other mobile OSes, with the obvious exception of a Metroesque interface. You can search for and stream songs, access your playlists, and browse through various genres and recommendations. Rhapsody Radio is also available for streaming, and you can pull up detailed information about the current artist with a single tap.

Subscribing to Rhapsody will run you $9.99 per month, but the two-month trial will give you plenty of time to decide whether or not it's the right fit for your streaming music needs -- whether you own a BlackBerry, iPhone, Android, or Windows Phone 7 device.

Farragomate is a social fridge magnet game where you make up sentences

You know those fridge magnet kits composed of a whole bunch of words? The ones you put all over your fridge door and then try to arrange into all sorts of juvenile and/or amusing sentences. Well, Farragomate is the social, webby version of that very same pastime.

You get to play with a bunch of random strangers in real-time, and make up sentences out of a pre-set collection of words, including some fairly naughty ones, and all players' nicknames. As you can imagine, some of the results are not child-friendly.

There are ten rounds to a game. Once a round is done, players get to vote for their favorite sentence from that round. You can't vote for your own creation, of course. There's in-game chat, too.

I think the vocabulary could be made a bit more eclectic, but even as it is, it's a nice way to spend a few minutes and meet random strangers on the Internet (always a thrilling experience).

Google?s Robotic Recipe Search Favors SEO Over Good Food

The entity with the greatest influence on what Americans cook is not Costco or Trader Joe?s. It?s not the Food Network or The New York Times. It?s Google. Every month about a billion of its searches are for recipes. The dishes that its search engine turns up, particularly those on the first page of results, have a huge impact on what Americans cook. Which is why, with a recent change in its recipe search, Google has, in effect, taken sides in the food war. Unfortunately, it's taken the wrong one. In late February, when Google announced that it was adding a new kind of search, specifically for recipes, it seemed like good news for a site like ours -? at last Google was shining its searchlight on content we deeply care about. But then came the bad news: once you get your new recipe results, you can refine the results in just 3 ways: by ingredient, by cooking time and by calories. While Google was just trying to improve its algorithm, thereby making the path to recipes easier and more efficient, it inadvertently stepped into the middle of the battle between the quick-and-easy faction and the cooking-matters group.
